The Combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Residency Program at Virginia Commonwealth University only accepts applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The Program also participates in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP); residents are not accepted outside of the Match.

- Personal Statement
- Medical Student Performance Evaluation (aka Dean's Letter)
- Medical School Transcript
- USMLE/COMLEX Scores (Step/Level I with application; Step/Level II when available)
- Three to four Letters of Recommendation
- One from the chair of internal medicine (required)1
- Two to three other letters from physicians who have personal knowledge of your clinical abilities and personal characteristics
The deadline for submitting all materials is December 15.
1In lieu of a chair letter, you may submit a department letter from a clerkship director or similar faculty member as long as the letter follows the CDIM/APPDIM guidelines.
Eligibility Requirements
- Applicants must be a graduate / eligible to graduate from a medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or the American Osteopathic Association Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (AOACOCA).
- All applicants must be within 4 years of graduation from medical school or direct patient care activity (either as an independent practitioner or as a trainee).
- Candidates must have passed USMLE Step I or NBOME COMLEX Level I for interview consideration. A passing Step/COMLEX Level II score is required prior to the first day of employment.
- All applicants must have sufficient written and spoken English language skills required for safe and effective patient care.
Additional Information for International Applicants
- Eligible graduates of medical schools outside the US or Canada must possess a valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) prior to appointment.
- A minimum of three months of direct patient care experiences (observerships or research do not apply) in U.S.-based healthcare settings is strongly preferred.
- J-1 visas are preferred for GME positions at VCU Health.
